The Ice Doom Mirror (「冷艶雲外鏡」?; Reien Ungaikyō) is a type of demon encountered in Ōkami. It belongs to the Doom Mirrors category of demons.

The Ice Doom Mirror is only encountered in the miniature version of the Imperial Palace, outside of the Emperor's bed in his bedroom, alongside a Fire Doom Mirror. Other than in the Imperial Palace, the Ice Doom Mirror is never encountered anywhere else, except for the North Ryoshima Coast Devil gate trial cave. The Ice Doom Mirror is a seemingly ordinary, palm-sized octagonal hand mirror with eight small round knobs, one on each edge for decoration. Most notably is that on the mirror's surface doesn't show any reflection, but the face of a smiling beautiful woman is shown instead. This woman's background may hold some symbolism to it.

The Ice Doom Mirror was once an ordinary mirror of a beautiful and popular actress who had the habit of bathing her mirror in flame before acting. She hoped that her beauty would last for eternity, and that hope became an obsession so strong that when she died, her soul was absorbed into her mirror. After this, anyone who gazed into the mirror will see a beautiful woman, but smiling at her causes instant death[1], as her inner warmth is long lost, and now she is only a cold-hearted killer.

Bestiary entry

  1. "A beautiful and popular actress hoped to retain her looks forever.
This hope became obsession, and her soul was sucked into her mirror.
Gazing into the mirror reveals a pretty woman.
Those who smile at her die instantly.
We must remind the actress of her inner warmth.
It is said that she bathed her mirror in flame before acting."

The Ice Doom Mirror, upon emerging, is covered in ice crystals as an impenetrable defense. This defense repels any kind of damage but fire, thus Inferno or Fireburst is required in rendering the demon vulnerable. After the procedure, use Golden Fury, Brown Rage and the Thief's Glove to start farming it, then strike it once with an attack to provoke an offense from the demon. Retreat to a certain distance, then execute a Sub-Reflector counterattack to waste the demon outright. If not, it would be stunned, an opportunity to deal a final strike, killing the demon. Use Inferno or Fireburst as its Floral Finisher.

  • The Ice Doom Mirror's background of an actress wanting to preserve her beauty for eternity may hold some symbolism with the mirror's element of ice. Specifically, with ice, the actress can "freeze" and retain her beauty forever in a cryostasis, hibernating state.
  • The Ice Doom Mirror, like all other demons of the Doom Mirrors category, is a type of tsukumogami, an item gaining a will of its own after being left intact for a century.
